Jackie Terrell

Most artists develop a certain style and stay with it over time. Interior designer Jackie Terrell is one whose style is hard to peg. Her versatility ranges from contemporary, to modern, to bold Mediterranean -- always with a playful edge. You can see from her work that she is comfortable with it all.

In 2008 Jackie collaborated with Cottage Living on the Los Angeles Idea House. On a lark, my friend Olga and I decided to go see the home. That's where we first learned about the amazing Ms. T.

Below are a few pictures from that gig. (all photos - Roger Davies)

Here is the entry to the home with unexpected color combinations from the first peek.

The kitchen was airy, fun and functional. Check out the dramatic tile work on the back splash. Tiles from Exquisite Surfaces.

The show stopping dining room.

The fabrics, texture and color choices in the living room were simultaneously bold and subdued. Check out the inlaid side tables flanking the fireplace from Oly. Notice those muted lime green tufted chairs, paired up with the yellow chartreuse silk curtain panels. All the upholstery came from Lee Industries. Who knew Lee could be so hip?

Jackie mounted classic roller shades at the bottom of the windows, instead of the top, allowing light to stream in while maintaining privacy.

The dreamy master bedroom and bath. If you're looking for a beachy blue paint this Martha Stewart color from Valspar, Snow Angel, was really nice.

And all I can say about the master bedroom is...this is me, with money!

Here's a bit more insight from Jackie on the creative process behind Idea House.

I recently had the opportunity to ask Ms. Terrell a few questions about design. Here's what she had to say...

Riviera View: Is there a particular color scheme you're drawn to these days?

Jackie Terrell: I love all colors in the warm range...oranges, greens, reds.....even my pics for blue are the non cold versions.

RV: What other designers and/or artists inspire your work?

JT: Tibor and Maira Kalman, the Eamses, Corita Kent.....all for their out of box qualities.

RV: For your L.A. clients, do you use more upholstery or slipcovers?

JT: Upholstery I guess but it depends.

RV: What design trend have you had enough of?

JT: Hollywood Regency.

RV: What are your favorite L.A. design resources/shops?

JT: Plastica
ok
Tortoise General Store
Double Vision
Bourgeois Boheme
Eccola
Santa Maria Novella

RV
: If you could take an unexpected trip to any destination where would you go?

JT: Tokyo

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Jackie for sharing her design insight with Riviera View.

I'll end this post with a quote from one of her favorite artists.

"Love the moment, and the energy of that moment will spread beyond all boundaries."
